You might have heard that United will be charging a $25 service fee for a second checked bag on domestic flights. The policy is effective May 5, 2008 for United Economy® tickets purchased on/after February 4, 2008.

Because you are a valued Premier® member of Mileage Plus, we are delighted to inform you that you and your companions traveling on the same reservation can each still check two bags free of charge, up to 50 lb/23 kg per piece. Overweight and excess baggage fees will apply.

Also effective May 5, 2008, we have also simplified many of the other fees charged to check items that require special handling because they are large, overweight or fragile.

As of February 4, 2008, United has a new checked baggage policy. Non-elite Mileage Plus^® members and non-members traveling on non-refundable Economy tickets within the United States, Canada and U.S. territories, may check one bag for free and a second for a $25 fee. The new policy applies to tickets purchased beginning February 4, 2008 for travel on or after May 5, 2008.
